Communication tips to increase voter turnout
Did your own proposal proceed to a vote, or did you find a great proposal that you would like to see happen? We've put together some tips below to help you share information about OmaStadi proposals.
The OmaStadi vote will take place between 11 and 29 March 2026 on the OmaStadi website. All residents of Helsinki aged 13 and over are eligible to vote. Using strong identification ensures that only those who are eligible are able to vote. Schoolchildren can log in with their edu.hel.fi account at City of Helsinki schools or with their Wilma account at other schools.
10 communication tips: How to share information about an OmaStadi proposal!
- Tell the story behind the proposal. Explain how the idea came about and how it will benefit city residents. Stories evoke emotions and raise interest.
- Utilise social media. Make short posts on social media channels. Use pictures and videos to illustrate the idea.
- Use the proposal's own link, name and the City’s official hashtags .Share the proposal’s own link. Provide the name of the proposal and the major district so that people can find it on the omastadi.hel.fi website. Add the #OmaStadi and #Helsinki hashtags to your social media posts.
- Make a short video. Make a 30–60-second video in which you explain the idea succinctly and invite people to vote. Works well on social media.
- Create a clear call to action. Provide a concrete call to action: “Vote for my/this proposal on OmaStadi in March!” and add a link to the voting page.
- Take advantage of local groups and communities. Share the proposal in Facebook groups in your area, on your building's notice board or in hobby groups. Also take advantage of the notice boards in shops!
- Make visual materials. A poster or picture with the name of the proposal and voting instructions will attract attention.
- Explain the concrete benefits. For example, “This will improve children's play areas” or “Improve safety for cyclists”. Benefits motivate people to vote.
- Involve others. Ask your friends and neighbours to share the proposal on their own channels – networks boost visibility.
- Be on time and remind people .Start communicating well before the vote and remind people several times during the voting period.
