Ehdotuksen kuvaus

Finnish education is of high quality. Differences in learning results of different schools are small and nearly all students complete comprehensive school within target time. The goal is for everyone to have an equal opportunity to receive high quality education regardless of the family’s income and to grow up to become active citizens. However, it might be hard for children from multicultural families to find opportunities to study their native languages (other than Finnish/Swedish) at school. For example, it was mentioned by some residents that there are not enough study hours of Russian language, or that kids have to travel far from their homes to have mother tongue lessons, and that in some groups there is a big age difference between students.

This proposal suggests organizing more study hours of native languages for children in the form of club activities. The pilot project (1-2 years) will require the employment of a teaching instructor/coordinator who will 1) define the demand for certain foreign languages in (a) specific city area(s) and 2) develop the program for club activities.
Studying native languages through various activities (e.g. hobbies) can be combined with enhancing Finnish language skills at the same time (if necessary). These activities can be organized in school premises.

Budgeting (discussed with the City expert):
-Hiring a teaching coordinator for 1-2 years
-Organizing club activities in (a) chosen language(s) 2-3 times a week for 1 year
