Transforming lawns into flower fields and urban farms – helping the climate, pollinators and the Baltic Sea
Lawns that are not in active use will be replaced with flower fields. Fruit trees, berry bushes and mushroom farms will be planted where appropriate, using a farming method that binds carbon. Locals will be provided with the opportunity to engage in urban farming and communal activities. The plan has been refined together with the authors of the plan. The project ended up turning lawns into flower fields on a scale encompassing the entirety of Helsinki. The project is extensive and will continue in 2021.

I would love this proposal to come to Vuosaari.
There are many lawns that are still being shaved right down to the ground in spring (cutting down dandelions and other flowers that are food for insects, animals and potentially humans).
There is also an excessive use of leaf-blowers in autumn here which destroys insect hibernation possibilities.
If this project could also have a knock-on effect where also social and private building associations become more conscious about pollinator-positive strategies, that would be fabulous!
