Sea Rubbish Removal- and reducing the risks
It is lovely to take a stroll by the waterways around Helsinki, but increasingly the view of the water is one of eddying currents of rubbish floating about. When I lived in Amsterdam, I noticed they employed water filtering systems in various locations to help deal with such challenges. Could Helsinki place such rubbish filtering mechanisms in targeted spots --such as Hietalahti?
(One of the biggest offenders is the increase of take away coffee cups--or rather the lids--could Helsinki make a design competition to do away with plastic lids and design a paper replacement?)
So, is there perhaps merit for creating a two prong approach: reduce the risk to the environment, by doing away with plastic lids; and work on removing what does enter the sea?
For the eco-lid design piece, would Aalto and their Urban Mill be interested in thinking through this? Aalto too, and their water engineering students might be able to get involved in helping with the design of the water filtration mechanism. (Perhaps different systems could be evaluated in different strategic areas- if the Aino Acktén Huvila project is undertaken, perhaps within the waters there another mechanism could be placed to highlight various design & function possibilities- maybe even from differing institutions of higher education?
Reflecting on how close Hietalahti is to the former campus of Metropolia, the other day, I chatted with a person who was out having a smoking break, to ask about the use of the school at the moment. I was told the big grey edifice facing the market and the harbour is going to be converted into a hotel, and the buildings closer to the Aleksanterin teatteri will be converted by Kojamo into housing units. (My hope was that the school might still be there and that their engineering students might perhaps be involved within the project---but alas, no. That said, it seems these waters really will need some tender loving care, as it seems more and more will be heading there.)

Hey
During March, city experts have commented on the proposals on the OmaStadi website and the proposals will be finalized together with city experts also in teemaraksa online workshops. Not all proposals will be addressed at teemaraksa workshops, as some will be completed on the OmaStadi website by co-development and discussion.
Teemaraksa workshop for your proposal is taking place at xx.xx.2021 from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm.
It can happen that you will receive a message from the city expert to the comment field of your proposal that your proposal is ready as such and will proceed next to cost calculation. In this case, we will automatically cancel your registration for the workshop if you have already registered.

Hello Jarkko,
What an interesting process OmaStadi is! So neat to see public generated ideas blossom into the next phase! I hope this Sea Rubbish Removal project might just be developed to go further, and would like to be able to attend the workshop which is the next phase in the process. However, I am curious to know if the time allotted for the meeting is meant to be on Monday- 12.4.2021 or is it instead set for Wednesday-14.4.2021?
Kind regards,
Kerry
Thanks Kerry for your feedback and love that you are in this process :) And yes you are right it is Monday 12.4! My mistake. So sorry for this :) Glad if you are able to join.
Yours,
Jarkko Laaksonen
Hello,
The joint development of proposals will continue here on the online platform until 21.5. During this time, city experts will comment on the proposals and, if necessary, request clarifications so that the proposals are ready for costing and later this year for residents to vote.
Edit the proposal according to experts comments by the deadline of 21.5.
If you participated in the online workshops during the previous two weeks, please also remember to modify your proposal according to the comments of the city experts presented in the workshops. When the proposal is complete, the city expert acknowledges it by commenting “ready for costing”.
The title and text of the proposal will appear during the vote. At this stage, it is also worthwhile to make them as descriptive and attractive as possible.
Have a nice wait for first of May 😊

Hello, Thank you for your proposal! Now it is ready for the budgetig and voting. If the proposal is selected in voting, the Urban Environment Division will plan specific implementation. Good luck! Regards, Urban Environment Division
When it is said that budgeting is the phase which is next, is it so that you will prepare a budget? Or is it that you would like for me to be involved in that process?
