Proposal description
More courses in English, which could include parenting courses, cooking classes, music lessons, outdoor activities, meditation & yoga classes, well-being, discussions about life in Finland & Finnish culture.
---
International community of Helsinki has been growing extensively over the recent years, and, according to Statistics Finland, there were more than 200,000 people with foreign background living in Greater Helsinki at the end of 2019. Diverse multicultural activities, which enhance engagement & participation of the city residents, are crucial to building a thriving society.
For example, Helsingin Työväenopisto (Helsinki Adult Education Centre) organizes evening, daytime & weekend activities for adults (16 years of age or older) and families. Courses include a variety of subjects, e.g. parenting classes, cooking, music, meditation & yoga courses, outdoor activities. Courses are open for all, organized in different city areas, & the teaching language is mainly Finnish.
This proposal suggests expanding course offering in English (if the budget allows, also in other languages e.g. Russian, Arabic, Estonian, Somali etc.). The project might require the employment of a project coordinator who will develop the program of diverse activities in different languages.
The selection of courses could include e.g. parenting courses with childcare, cooking classes (also 'community kitchen'), music lessons (also music workshops with young musicians), outdoor activities (nature walks, hiking), meditation & yoga classes, well-being (e.g. dealing with everyday life stress), discussions about life in Finland & Finnish culture, sauna visits, museum visits, etc.
Budgeting (discussed with the City expert)
(Option 1, preferable) Organizing regular multicultural activities for a period of 2 years: 900 hours of teaching = €36,000 (teachers' salaries)
(Option 2) Option 1 + Hiring a project coordinator for 2 years => ~€100,000
Activities can be organized, coordinated & administrated by Helsingin työväenopisto. Courses can be organized in Työväenopisto's existing premises & schools, so no budget costs for rent needed.
