Proposal
It is lovely to take a stroll by the waterways around Helsinki, but increasingly the view of the water is one of eddying currents of rubbish floating about. When I lived in Amsterdam, I noticed they employed water filtering systems in various locations to help deal with such challenges. Could Helsinki place such rubbish filtering mechanisms in targeted spots --such as Hietalahti?
(One of the biggest offenders is the increase of take away coffee cups--or rather the lids--could Helsinki make a design competition to do away with plastic lids and design a paper replacement?)
So, is there perhaps merit for creating a two prong approach: reduce the risk to the environment, by doing away with plastic lids; and work on removing what does enter the sea?
For the eco-lid design piece, would Aalto and their Urban Mill be interested in thinking through this? Aalto too, and their water engineering students might be able to get involved in helping with the design of the water filtration mechanism. (Perhaps different systems could be evaluated in different strategic areas- if the Aino Acktén Huvila project is undertaken, perhaps within the waters there another mechanism could be placed to highlight various design & function possibilities- maybe even from differing institutions of higher education?
Reflecting on how close Hietalahti is to the former campus of Metropolia, the other day, I chatted with a person who was out having a smoking break, to ask about the use of the school at the moment. I was told the big grey edifice facing the market and the harbour is going to be converted into a hotel, and the buildings closer to the Aleksanterin teatteri will be converted by Kojamo into housing units. (My hope was that the school might still be there and that their engineering students might perhaps be involved within the project---but alas, no. That said, it seems these waters really will need some tender loving care, as it seems more and more will be heading there.)

Hello Jarkko,
What an interesting process OmaStadi is! So neat to see public generated ideas blossom into the next phase! I hope this Sea Rubbish Removal project might just be developed to go further, and would like to be able to attend the workshop which is the next phase in the process. However, I am curious to know if the time allotted for the meeting is meant to be on Monday- 12.4.2021 or is it instead set for Wednesday-14.4.2021?
Kind regards,
Kerry
Thanks Kerry for your feedback and love that you are in this process :) And yes you are right it is Monday 12.4! My mistake. So sorry for this :) Glad if you are able to join.
Yours,
Jarkko Laaksonen
