Enhancing the opportunities to study native languages at schools
Finnish education is of high quality. Differences in the learning results of different schools are small and nearly all students complete comprehensive school within target time. The goal is for everyone to have an equal opportunity to receive high quality education regardless of the family’s income and to grow up to become active citizens. However It might be hard for children from multicultural families to find opportunities to study their native languages (other than Finnish/Swedish) at school. For example, it was mentioned by some residents that there are not enough study hours of Russian language, or that they have to travel far from their homes, and that in some groups there is a big age difference between students.

During March, city experts have commented on the proposals on the OmaStadi website and the proposals will be finalized together with city experts also in teemaraksa online workshops. Not all proposals will be addressed at teemaraksa workshops, as some will be completed on the OmaStadi website by co-development and discussion.
Teemaraksa workshop for your proposal is taking place at Monday 19.4.2021 from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm.
It can happen that you will receive a message from the city expert to the comment field of your proposal that your proposal is ready as such and will proceed next to cost calculation. In this case, we will automatically cancel your registration for the workshop if you have already registered.

Thank you for your feedback. We will give you some hints and if you wish you can clarify and define your proposal further according to these hints given.
Could your proposal to enhance the teaching of native languages be a pilot project to be voted in OmaStadi. In case this would be a pilot consider the following steps.
• Define the language or languages that would be taught.
• Define period of time for the pilot
• Name a few schools or area where the pilot could be carried out
• Name the action. There are a few possibilities:
1. Organize club type of activity in certain schools or at certain area in certain languages.
2. Hire mother tongue teachers to work together with class teachers and subject teachers during the lessons of different school subjects. In this case the language would be a mean of learning multiligualy and a target of learning at the same time.
