During the pandemic many Helsinki residents have in a way rediscovered the nature of the city. Daily routines and the lockdown have strongly affected us, so that we see our green spaces as potential assets. We are aware of the high demand for well-organized outdoor spaces where people could spend time alone or with their loved ones, make picnics, practice their hobbies, learn about nature, etc.
This proposal suggests creating specially organized outdoor community spaces (community gardens) in different areas of Helsinki. Community gardens are a great way to bring people together, promote healthy activities and are good for the environment.
-Installed vegetable boxes would be available for people interested in growing vegetables and/or flowers;
-Installed tables with benches will allow residents to have outside picnics with their families and friends.
The ultimate goal is to have organized outdoor spaces in all city areas in the future. It would be great if recycled materials could be used in this project.
Budgeting (discussed with the City experts):
-5 community gardens in 5 different city areas (2nd option - 3 community gardens in 3 different city areas - if the proposal's cost becomes too expensive)
-Each community garden would include 20 vegetable boxes, 1 water system container, 1 tool box, 1 table area with benches.

We had a nice discussion with the City experts during teemaraksa on 14.04.21 and were given advice regarding our proposal. We will focus on ideas about vegetable boxes and benches with tables around Helsinki, and will edit this proposal before 07.05.21.
In regard to other ideas from our proposal:
-All activities with community (allotment) gardens are handled by Suomen Siirtolapuutarhaliitto (The Allotment Garden Association). Nowadays there are rather big queues of people waiting to get their slots at allotment gardens, but, as we were told, new allotment gardens are gradually opening.
-Wild-growing zones (meadows) are being planned and are coming soon to Sibelius Park and other city areas.
-The City is working on different ways of how to deal with recreation areas where geese are nesting.
