Idea
It is lovely to take a stroll by the waterways around Helsinki, but increasingly the view of the water is one of eddying currents of rubbish floating about. When I lived in Amsterdam, I noticed they employed water filtering systems in various locations to help deal with such challenges. Could Helsinki place such rubbish filtering mechanisms in targeted spots --such as Hietalahti?
(One of the biggest offenders is the increase of take away coffee cups--or rather the lids--could Helsinki make a design competition to do away with plastic lids and design a paper replacement?)

Good idea
Hello Steve- I see you have been very involved in environmental matters especially concerning natural waters. I am wondering which piece of the idea I present, you feel is worth developing further into an Oma Stadi co-creation idea? Do you feel the design competition for replacing take-away lids is the idea to pursue, or the water filtration system is of more interest--- or perhaps your thought was the two prong approach is what merits pursuing?
If the eco-lid design piece is of interest, I was thinking that perhaps Aalto and their Urban Mill might be interested in thinking through this.
If the filtration system, I do not know of local water engineers, do you?
Hi Kerry! Thanks for noticing :) From my perspective, the water filtration system (and all water filtration solutions) is worth developing further into an Oma-Stadi co-creation idea! This would have immediate benefits for the local ecosystems, wildlife, and residents, and as an infrastructure project might be easier to implement for the City of Helsinki. Water pollution should be one of Helsinki's top environmental priorities moving forward.
I believe non-plastic coffee lids already exist, so perhaps the high costs are prohibitive for companies. The design competition for non-plastic disposable food packaging products should definitely be initiated though! It sounds like Aalto and Urban Mill would be two such places that could host this competition.
